Hi all, I have a little girl aged 3 and 1/2 and whenever she is ill, she starts with the usual high temparature , then runny nose etc what i am more worried about is that her ears run with wax and she loses a yellow/green discharge from her winkle (urinary tract) - only noticeable in her pants, when she was two she had a reaction to penicillin which caused thrush and it is since this episode that it has happened. Friends are saying it is just her way of getting the virus/infection out of her body.

I am not a fan of antibiotics and she has only ever had that penicillin which she reacted to.

Any advise grateful.

Serene Katy agony auntYes, grommits would certainly cure recurring ear infections, as would removal of the adenoids and or the tonsils. The overall health of your child can really improve, a consultant will decide if this is the best option for her. The high temperature must be addressed immediately, when it occurs. (using a children's paracetemol liquid, following instructions carefully) If this doesn't bring down the temperature rapidly, use a face cloth dipped in cold water and wrung out, either just on the fore head or in strokes all over the torso, depending on the severity of the fever. Obviously call your GP if this persists.

I would also suggest plenty of liquids as the body quickly becomes dehydrated during fever which would result in a more concentrated urine, this could be why urine is greenish, but would not explain a 'discharge'. However, to be on the safe side, bring a sample in IF (we hope not) your child presents with these sympthoms again and get her checked out. There are other antibiotics out there, and they can be used wisely. :)

my son is 16 mths old and from being 7 moths is always getting infections i took him to the doctors because he kept on getting runny green discharge from his ear my doctor sent me to a consultant at hospital and it turns out he needs a grommit inside his ear because his tubes arnt open enough. so if i was u i would take ur child to doctors because it may be somthing as small as my sons problems.it somtimes looks worse than it is with children.good luck

eyeswideopen agony auntI definitely would consult with a pediatrician on this one. My three kids would run fevers and get nasal discharges but never an ear or urinary discharge. The doctor will be able to determine whether this is something to be concerned about. I would also like to add that now a days there are lots of alternative antibiotics to penicillin. Sometimes you have no choice but to use one of these to cure an infection. Good luck.
