Hi,

I have a 3 year old son, and he has been masturbating, and telling me he likes to play with his tagger and that it feels nice, is this normal for him to be doing this at this age, and also i do i deal with it?

rcn agony auntJust let him play away. Scolding him for a natural action may cause later issues in having a healthy sexual relationship with another. I heard boys even grab a bit before their born.

Take care.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (17 August 2006):

Hey there,

Well, I have a 4 year old son and he does the same thing - and you know what? So do most of his little friends, any old chance they get. The professionals usually say the best way to deal with this is to tell him that its ok to touch your own body but it can make people feel uncomfortable and is best kept to your bedroom. When i tried this, my little angel went sloping off to his room tugging at his trousers as he went!!! Which made me feel MORE uncomfortable than him sitting in the family room whilst having a fiddle if I'm honest. So now, I just don't make an issue of it at all and use distraction as a means to stop him. I have also learnt that barking at him to take his hand out his pants turns the whole thing into a game and he does it to get a laugh, not to mention the worry that he may well develope issues in later life if led to believe this is 'wrong'. So, turn a blind eye (no pun intended there!), and I believe that he will grow out of it. Kids are the greatest mimicks don't forget - as soon as he realises that grown ups don't go round doing this (I hope!), it will lose his appeal.

Good luck sweetie, and remember to keep your sense of humour!xx
