hi, my nearly four year old daughter who I think may have some sort of hyperactivity disorder, is driving me to distraction. she has recently started to have violent tantrums and has hurt my son who is 7, and myself in the process. i can't think of any occassions where she has witnessed this in others and I have tried star charts, time-outs and ignoring the bad behaviour but it seems to be getting worse. my patience is waning because she wakes me several times a night and i am exhausted......any advice?

DrPsych agony aunt1. Get a formal diagnosis from a doctor or psychologist because it will help when she goes to school.

2. There are a range of treatment options. The main drug for ADHD is Ritalin but research has shown that ADHD children are in need of fatty acid supplementation (omega fish oils) and zinc. The additive free diet also seems effective.

3. There are a lot of good behaviour management programmes available out there - get in touch with local support groups to access services.

eyeswideopen agony auntDefinitely get her to the doctor to rule out any physical causes and he/she may suggest having her evaluated for any behavior disorders. With children it's very important to get them checked out for physical problems first because sometimes the cause for bad behavior is health related. Plus as a parent you feel awful having disciplined a child who was acting out due to physical ailment. Good luck.

ThePixie agony auntI have to say I agree with Anglicc. Medication isn't always needed and should be used once other avenues are explored. Cutting out sugar is a good start, but also many hyperactive children react badly to alot of chemical preservatives and food colourings. Try cutting these out too. You can go to your doctor and be referred to a dietician who can help you work out a food plan so your child still gets everything they need. Very ofter parents do see an improvement in their childs behaviour via this method. It's definiely worth a try before going for the medication route.

Angelicc agony auntIf your son has ADHD medication may not be the right route for him, sometimes a change in diet no sugar in his diet and lots of vegatables. sometimes just a change in diet helps.
