Dr. Psyche gave an excellent response!

Address your concerns to your family doctor and they will refer you to a pediatrician and dietician as well and the gagging and diet restriction sounds associative and he may needs some professional counselling.

It is good of you to recognize an issue or concern and I hope you can get some information, help and with it; peace.

*hugs*

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom + , writes (14 July 2006):

DrPsych agony auntYour son may have a range of medical or psychological conditions that would explain his behaviour. You have identified that he has a problem, but you need to take that next step now and make sure he is seen by a doctor. If he has a limited diet then it will lead to malnutrition in the long term which is associated with a range of medical conditions. Crohn’s disease is not 100% genetically transmitted but there is an increased risk of digestive and bowel disorders in families where one person has this disorder. Of course if you have an eating disorder then he may have acquired some of those behavioural characteristics by watching your relationship with food over the years. Whatever the situation, he clearly needs specialist help.
